In this very hot summer, folks have been rallying outside Citigroup headquarters in New York City to call attention to Citi’s funding of climate chaos.  Week 2, June 17–20, the focus was on Youth and Palestine.  The focus this week is on funding military abuses.  Here is the statement from the Summer of Heat Web site:

From Palestine to Haiti, Wall Street finances colonialism, genocide, war and death worldwide — funneling billions into bombs, surveillance, and weapons. Financing these wars also means fueling the climate crisis itself: wars spew pollution and destroy life-sustaining ecosystems worldwide.

We’ve seen a global movement rise up to hold institutions complicit in war and imperialism accountable. Join us to ensure Wall Street does not escape the heat!

More specifically, the focus is on Citigroup:

Citibank is a major funder of fossil fuels, pouring more than $396 billion into oil, gas, and coal since late 2015. Citi is not only a major backer of climate catastrophe — it is also a major backer of war, genocide, and imperialism worldwide. From Gaza to Haiti, Citi has been one of the largest U.S. financial institutions at the core of some of the world’s deadliest conflicts. Join us 7/18 at 9 a.m. for a rally at Citi HQ demanding Citi: Stop Funding Death!

From the Oil and Gas Action Network:

What do the ongoing genocide in Gaza and climate destruction have in common?

Wall Street is at the heart of both, whether it’s the billions flowing into the Israeli military or the billions flowing into fossil fuel expansion such as Chevron’s massive gas projects off the coast of contested Palestinian borders.

Militarism and climate change go hand-in-hand in other ways too, as the military-industrial-complex is one of the largest fossil fuel users in the world, one of the largest sources of pollution, and wars of course leave death and destruction in their wake.

Citibank in particular, is deeply invested in Israel’s infrastructure as the largest U.S. banking institution in the country, especially in its role funding the “tech-washing” of Israeli apartheid through investments in Israel’s tech sector. Citibank has also actively facilitated billions in Israeli military weapons funding, helping to financially power the infrastructure that keeps apartheid running. And of course, Citi is one of the largest funders of the fossil fuel industry.
